Vancouver businesses often sell to a mix of local residents, visitors and international clients, and many care about design, sustainability and outdoor lifestyle. This page covers how to scope a website refresh that supports informed enquiries, what to check locally, and how I work across the Pacific time gap from Delhi NCR.

What shapes Vancouver buying behaviour

Vancouver combines technology, film and visual effects, gaming, clean energy, tourism, trade through its port, real estate, health and wellness, and outdoor and lifestyle businesses. Customers tend to be thoughtful, comfortable researching online, and interested in values: how a product is made, where it comes from, and who is behind the business.

That means a website has to answer more than price. People want to see the business behind it, understand its approach and compare it with alternatives. Authentic photography, specific descriptions and honest statements usually work better than generic claims. If you make a sustainability claim, be ready to explain it in plain terms, because audiences notice vague green language.

International clients sometimes research Vancouver companies from afar, especially in technology, film and trade. For them, a clear explanation of your process, past work you can show and how to start a project matters more than local references. Plan for a reader in another time zone and another language.

Search, social and community

Google and Maps drive discovery for local services, restaurants, clinics, trades and shops. Instagram carries much of the outdoor, food, design and wellness world, and YouTube and Reddit serve technical and hobby audiences. LinkedIn matters for technology and professional services. Communities of Chinese-speaking and South Asian residents may use their own platforms and messaging apps, so ask your customers where they actually are.

Visitors plan ahead. For tourism, outdoor activities and events, travel websites, maps and reviews matter, and pages need to show seasons, locations, safety information and booking steps clearly. Weather affects demand here more than in many cities, so content and campaigns often need to bend to the season.

Sectors and their marketing problems

Technology and creative studios usually have impressive work but weak presentation of it. Tourism and outdoor businesses have attractive images and unclear booking steps. Real estate and construction businesses compete locally and need trust. Health and wellness operators need to explain services and credentials. Trade-oriented firms with Asian and North American customers need a site that works for people reading in a second language.

For most, a website refresh offers more than extra advertising. Website Design and Development and Conversion Optimisation go together: first understand which pages influence enquiries, then fix those, then measure. A redesign without that analysis is mostly decoration.

Imagery is a competitive advantage in a city known for its scenery. Replace generic photographs with real ones of your team, your space and your work. You do not need a large production. A planned half day with a local photographer and a short list from me often changes the tone of the whole site.

Scoping a refresh, not an open-ended redesign

I ask clients to start with a ranked list of pages: which ones bring visitors, which ones lead to enquiries, which ones are rarely seen and which ones are outdated. Then I decide with them what to keep, what to rewrite and what to remove. A smaller, clearer site is often better than a larger one.

I also write a content responsibility list. Who supplies photographs, who writes service descriptions, who checks prices, who approves legal text? Websites are usually late because content is late, not because design is slow. Naming owners and dates at the start is the most reliable schedule protection I know.

I also set a rule that every page must have a purpose and one main action. A page without a clear job is a candidate for removal or merging. This keeps the maintenance burden low and makes reporting easier.

What to check locally

British Columbia has its own private-sector privacy law alongside federal rules, and Canada's anti-spam legislation applies to commercial email and text messages. Consent, identification and unsubscribe handling matter. Accessibility is increasingly expected, and sector rules apply for health, finance and real estate. Please confirm with a Canadian adviser. I build forms and consent text so they can be updated.

Prices are in Canadian dollars. Spelling follows Canadian conventions, and any Indigenous place names or cultural references should be used carefully and checked with appropriate people. If you serve Mandarin, Cantonese or Punjabi speakers, use native reviewers rather than machine translation.

Remote review across the Pacific

Vancouver follows Pacific Time, twelve and a half hours behind India while daylight saving applies (about mid-March to early November) and thirteen and a half hours otherwise. Eight in the morning in Vancouver is half past eight in the evening for me in summer and half past nine in winter. Seven in the morning is half past seven or half past eight in the evening.

Calls therefore take place at your morning and my evening. Between calls, I send page layouts, copy and decisions in a shared document with clear questions, so reviews can be done in your own time. I work while you sleep, so a round of comments at the end of your day is usually answered by the next morning. Responsive layouts are reviewed on actual devices before launch.

First 30 to 60 days

Weeks one and two cover the audit: analytics, enquiry data, the current pages, mobile behaviour and speed. We agree the priority pages, content owners and success measure. Weeks three to five cover rewriting, layout, imagery and build. Week six is for testing on phones and tablets, forms, tracking and accessibility.

After launch, we watch the first weeks closely, fix small issues, and review enquiry quality. Total time depends on the number of pages, availability of photography, and how many people approve. A small site can move quickly; a large site with many stakeholders needs more time.

Maintenance deserves a plan after launch. Prices, hours, staff, seasonal offers and policies change, and a site that is not updated quietly loses trust. Agree who owns each page and how often it is reviewed.

Mistakes, and who this is for

Mistakes I see: starting design before content, using stock images that could be anywhere, hiding contact details to look minimal, ignoring page speed, and leaving old pages live that contradict the new ones.

This suits Vancouver businesses that want a clear, honest website and a disciplined remote process. It does not suit those who want an in-person design studio, on-site photography from me, or an open-ended redesign without priorities. International clients pay flat USD pricing, agreed before work starts.
