Doha is a compact, fast-moving market where a large share of residents are expatriates and where institutions, energy, education and healthcare shape demand. This page explains how buyers there search and decide, what to localise, and how I work with Qatar-facing businesses from Delhi NCR across a two and a half hour time difference.

A small market with layered audiences

Qatar has a relatively small population, and a large proportion of residents are expatriates from many countries, alongside Qatari nationals. For a marketer, that means audiences are layered by language, nationality, income and length of stay. A message that works for a Qatari family may not suit a new professional arriving on a contract, and neither is the same as a long-term South Asian resident.

Because the market is small, reputation spreads fast and the same people appear in many places. Customers talk to each other, and a poor service experience reaches a lot of people quickly. This makes response speed and honesty about availability more important than clever advertising. I usually begin by clarifying exactly which audience a business wants to serve first.

It also means that data you gather yourself matters. With a limited pool of customers, you cannot rely on broad averages. Track your own enquiries by source, language and service from the start, so decisions come from your actual customers and not from assumptions about the region.

How people look for services

Google is the main search engine, and mobile use is high. Instagram, Snapchat, TikTok and X are all in use, and WhatsApp is how many people communicate with businesses, book appointments and ask follow-up questions. Delivery and booking platforms play an important part in food, retail and services, and local classifieds and community sites are used for housing, jobs and second-hand goods.

For service businesses such as clinics, salons, schools and home services, a Google Business Profile with correct hours, a map pin, photographs and real reviews often matters more than the website homepage. A caller wants to see that you are open, nearby and reachable. I check these basics early because they cost little and affect every campaign built on top.

Sectors and their marketing problems

Energy and construction support a large professional and B2B ecosystem; healthcare, education and sport are well developed; hospitality and retail serve residents and visitors alike. The main B2B problem is visibility to a small number of decision-makers who may rely on introductions. The main consumer problem is differentiation, since many providers offer similar services at similar prices.

Appointment-based businesses face a particular problem: ads produce enquiries, but missed calls and slow replies waste them. For these, I look at the whole path from advert to confirmed booking, including reminders and no-show handling. That is where Performance Marketing and Conversion Optimisation fit together, and why I look at response ownership before adding more traffic.

Education, healthcare and sport-related organisations share a different issue: many audiences with many questions. A parent, a student and an employer each want different information. Separate pages for each group, written plainly, usually outperform one long page that tries to answer everybody.

What to localise

Arabic and English are both normally needed. English serves much of the business and expatriate community, while Arabic matters for Qatari audiences, public-facing brands and anything institutional. Other languages may be useful for specific communities, but I would test that on a small scale first. Service availability should be stated clearly, including areas covered, working days and any local holiday closures.

Qatar has its own data protection law and its own rules for advertising and e-commerce. They evolve, and sector regulators add requirements, so confirm the current position with a local adviser. Plan around the calendar too: Ramadan, Eid, National Day in December and the hot summer months, when many residents travel, all change demand and tone.

Working with a two and a half hour gap

Qatar is three hours ahead of UTC and does not use daylight saving, so it is two and a half hours behind India all year. Nine in the morning in Doha is half past eleven in India; four in the afternoon is half past six. Qatari office hours overlap with my day almost completely, so same-day answers are normal.

The working week in Qatar is usually Sunday to Thursday, with Friday and Saturday off. That gives four shared days from Monday to Thursday. I can arrange Sunday calls when a decision cannot wait, and I try to make sure that anything needing Qatari approval on a Sunday is ready for review beforehand, so Monday is for adjustments, not for starting.

A first 30 to 60 days

The first two weeks cover the offer and the response process. I look at what you actually sell, to whom, in which language, and what a good enquiry looks like. I check Google Business Profile details, the website's mobile behaviour, the contact options and the way calls and messages are handled. Often the quickest improvement is operational, not creative.

Weeks three to six cover campaign structure, landing pages, call and WhatsApp tracking, and a small-budget test. Weeks seven and eight are for review: which enquiries became appointments, which audiences responded, and what to stop. How much happens depends on the number of services, whether your staff can log outcomes, and how quickly approvals come back.

Tender-led work needs its own thinking. If you sell to public-sector or large corporate buyers, the website supports the process but rarely drives it. I would then spend more time on capability statements, case material you are free to share, and a presentation that works when read without you.

  • Clarify audience, offer and language
  • Fix local listings and mobile contact paths
  • Set up tracking for calls, forms and messages
  • Run a limited test with a review date
  • Decide what to scale, change or stop

Mistakes to avoid

A common mistake is advertising before the booking process is ready. Another is using English-only creative for services that rely on Arabic-speaking customers. Another is assuming expatriate audiences are the same, when a community from one country may use different platforms and phrases from another. Another is promising availability that staff cannot honour.

Overseas brands sometimes enter Qatar as an afterthought to a wider Gulf campaign. The market is small enough that this wastes budget unless the offer, delivery and support are real. If you cannot serve a customer in Doha, say so, rather than collecting enquiries you cannot fulfil.

Who this is for

This suits Doha service businesses, clinics, education providers, B2B firms and brands that want a steady, measured improvement in how enquiries become customers. It does not suit anyone who needs a consultant in the room each week or an Arabic copywriter within the same engagement. International clients pay flat USD pricing, agreed in writing at the start.
